ARCA CONTINENTAL S.A.B. DE C.V: Business and Government Drive Circular Economy in Mexico

Arca Continental S.A.B. de C.V. issued the following announcement on Dec. 5.

This morning in the Senate of the Republic, 60 companies, hand in hand with associations and chambers, signed the National Agreement for the New Plastic Economy in Mexico, promoted by the Ellen McArthury Foundation the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), with the aim of promoting proper waste management, through a circular economy model.

Each of the signatories has committed to set clear and ambitious goals by 2030, working together to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics, through innovation and redesign, becoming reusable, recyclable, compostable or usable plastics. These agreements will be registered with SEMARNAT, for monitoring and compliance.

In line with its efforts to reach the goal of a 'World without Waste', the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC) joined the agreement, with the presence of Coca-Cola Mexico, Arca Continental, Bepensa, Coca-Cola FEMSA , Jugos Del Valle – Santa Clara and the Association of Mexican Bottlers of Coca-Cola (ASCOCA). Similarly, its recycling plants, PetStar, the largest in the world, and IMER, the first built in Latin America, the civil association ECOCE and ANPRAC.

Other companies such as PepsiCo, Danone and Nestlé also participated, this being a clear example of the importance of the sum of efforts.

“We can assure you that this Agreement is not the final legislative path on plastic. There is still a lot to work on and, therefore, we recognize our responsibility and do not give up this task. What we are doing today is not the limit, on the contrary, it is the base material. From our Commission and the alliance between government, industry and key institutions, we will be able to avoid, together, the pollution of our rivers, seas, lakes, roads, from the bad use of plastic, ”reiterated Senator Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marin

Within the agreement, three ambitious goals were set for 2030: that the packages and containers are reusable, recyclable, compostable or 100% usable; that the collection rate is made up of 80% in PET and 45% on average of all plastics and that the recycled material content of these is 30%.

Likewise, it promotes the creation of management plans by material which will be mandatory and must be registered with the competent authority, in the same way the progress in the fulfillment of the commitments will be reported annually.

As part of its objectives, the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry seeks to recover and recycle 100% of its containers sold by 2030, in addition to that for the same year its packaging includes at least 50% of recycled materials. Also, they have set goals for 2025 , as all its containers are 100% recyclable and that 50% of its portfolio is made up of returnable containers.

Currently, the IMCC is the main food grade PET recycler in the country, thanks to its continuous evolution of packaging, infrastructure development, eco-design, waste generation prevention and the promotion of a recycling culture.

His efforts include the blue bottle of Ciel, made 100% of other bottles; the environmental movement 'Summer Sprite' in which brought together more than 3 thousand young people for the cleaning of 10 different bodies of water and urban environments of Mexico achieving the recovery of 24 tons of waste; having a portfolio composed of 43% for returnable packaging; that 98% of its containers are recyclable; In addition to the presentation of the site unmundosinresiduos.com to boost the sum of efforts in favor of sustainable development.
