British Chamber of Commerce in Mexico issued the following announcement on July 4.

Last week, BritChaM hosted a petite committee, exclusive breakfast- talk on Mexico’s coming general elections, and the accuracy of the polls. The talk was given by Rolando Ocampo, former director of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Ocampo worked in the public opinion sector of former president Vicente Fox’s administration and is currently a member of the presidential campaign staff of PRI candidate, José Antonio Meade.

The speaker explained that it is important to differentiate between two types of polls, the ones each candidate’s team organizes to gather information that is useful for strategic planning during their campaign and serve as a guide for decision making, and those that are public and appear in newspapers and other types of media. According to Ocampo, the latter are presenting rejection rates of about 50% and no answer rates of about 80%. He felt that drawing conclusions based on the results of such polls to be irresponsible.

Ocampo emphasized that differences in points between candidates may be overstated, because this has happened before in presidential elections, and that it is the moment of the election not polls what will determine who will govern the country.
